Ezra Shonkwiler
Portsmouth relatives and friends of Ezra Shonkwiler, well known and highly respected farmer of near Stockdale on Monday received the sad intelligence of his death on Sunday afternoon following a sudden turn for the worst in his long affliction. Mr. Shonkwiler has been a patient sufferer from paralysis for the past several years and some months ago following a partial recovery from one of those attacks had the misfortune to accidentally shoot himself while cleaning a pistol. At the time owing to his age it was not though that he could recover. But he rallied and his health was apparently better than for some time before. A sudden return of his old trouble aggravated by the wound resulted in his demise.

Mr. Shonkwiler was a son of Jacob and Nancy Shonkwiler, pioneer residents of southern pike county, and at the time of his death was upwards of seventy years of age. He served in the 33rd O. V. I. during the Civil War and was a member of the Scioto Post G. A. R. at Harrisonville from its organization to the day of his death.

After his return from the army he was married to Miss Nancy Galford, daughter of William Galford, another pioneer resident of Pike county, who survives him. The young couple began housekeeping in the same house so recently invaded by death and where they raised a large family, nearly all of whom together with numerous grandchildren survive.

Mr. Shonkwiler was a life long member of Madison Baptist church. He was of a deeply religious nature and a tireless worker in the cause of his Master. He was ever ready with a helping hand when sorrow or affliction invaded his community or his church. He possessed in a remarkable degree the talent for service in the time of affliction and his words of comfort and practical help have smoothed the roughness from many a path among those who knew him.

He was a lovable Christian character-one of the kind which a community can ill afford to lose. Peace to his ashes.
