Curtis Walker Cantrell was the 8th child born to William Alexander Cantrell and Appalona 'Lona' Brewington-Cantrell. He was orphaned at the age of three and taken in by Uncle Ed Hueffner and Ed's widowed twin sister Aunt Mary Hueffner-Weaver.
Lying about his age, he joined the Army when he was 16.
After being discharged from the Army he went to Detroit to seek employment, met and married Helen Gennrich, Feb. 11, 1928 in Detroit.
