Helena Anna Schmidt was born Sat. June 22, 1872 in MN. On Tues. Sept. 3, 1872, she was baptized at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 105 North Fifth Street in Mankato by Father Augustinius. Her sponsors were Bernard Beits and Elisabeth Spitzner.
Her Baptismal certificate states her name as Magdalena, not Helena. (Since she was called Lena, I wonder if her children assumed her full name was Helena.)
Her parents homesteaded near Butterfield and Lena personally plowed some of the soil.
She attended school in St. James, moving there with her parents at an early age. Her parents were one of the first settlers of the St. James and Butterfield communities.
On Tues. Oct. 15, 1895, at the age of 23, Lena married Henry Lockman at St. James Catholic Church, St. James, MN by Father J.D. Durwood. The witnesses were Frank J. Sandmeyer and Mary Smith. It was recorded on Oct. 19, 1895 at the Watonwan Court House.
Henry and Lena had eleven children during their marriage: Marie born in 1896, Julia born in 1898, George born in 1899, Anne born in 1900, John born in 1902, Frank born in 1904, Joseph born in 1906, Elisabeth born in 1907, William born in 1909, Henry Jr. born April 21,1911, who died at 10 mos. on April 21, 1912 and Cecelia born in 1913.
Henry, Helena and their children lived on a farm three miles north of Butterfield, MN. They moved to a farm in North Branch, MN when Cecelia was about 5 yrs. old, living there for ten years, before moving to St. Paul, MN. The family was living at 922 E. Minnehaha Ave. when Henry died in 1937. Helena continued to live there with her son, Frank, until he got married.
Helena then lived with her daughter Elizabeth (Tuts) and Carlin Carlson at their home at Tanners Lake ( 420 Lakeview) until she died there on Mon. Jan. 23, 1956 at 5:30 AM. She was 83 yrs. old.
The cause of death was broncho-pneumonia and uremia or liver failure. She had pneumonia for 6 days and uremia for the last 2 days of her life. Her doctor was Dr. H.J. Wolkoff of 1075 Hudson Rd. who signed the death certificate.
Visitation was on Tues. 6:30 to 10:00 PM at the Mueller Mortuary, St. Paul, MN and on Wed. 4:00 PM until Thurs. 9:30 AM at the Jensen Funeral Home, St. James, MN.
Requiem Mass was held on Thurs. Jan. 26, 1956 at St. James Catholic Church at 10:00 AM. Father Deikmann officiated and the children's choir sang at the service. Pallbearers were Ollie Spitzner, Ronald Spitzner, Lawrence Diedrick, Clarence Zender, Ralph Sandmeyer and Roman Sandmeyer. Helena was buried at St. James Catholic Cemetery, St. James, MN.
