He was born September 17, 1922 to the union of Allen Avery Sr. and Bessie Reese in Stratford, GA. Both parents preceded him in death. On October 17, 1953, he married Eliza Southern Avery who preceded him in death on February 18, 2013. He accepted Christ and was baptized at Shiloh M.B. Church, Lima, Ohio.
Mr. Avery retired from Lima Ford Engine Plant in the Winter 1988. He was one of the first employees hired when the plant opened in 1957; having worked in the constructing of the facility prior to gaining employment. He loved playing the harmonica for family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Mr. Avery was an avid sports fan, favoring the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves baseball teams. He was affectionately known by many as the "Taxi Man".
Survivors also include a son, Allen G. "Peachie" Avery III., of Lima; five daughters, Mary J. (Rubin) Williams, of Rockford, IL., and Gwenda F. Avery, Linda K. (Darryl) Garrett, Barbara J. (Alex) Townsend, and Christine Avery, all of Lima; 8 Grandchildren, 14 Great- Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great-Grandchild; three sisters-in-law, Julia B. Harris, Sarah F. Southern and Nancy P. Brown. A special niece, Mary (Gloria) Reese, of Columbus, GA.; and special cousin, Mattie Lu Clemons, of Anderson, SC. Child of the Heart: Steven (Lisa) Horton. Special longtime friend, Richard Wright of Lima.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Oscar Williams and Arthur McCoy; a sister, Bessie Peterson.
Services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, September 30, 2013 at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Cleven Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
