Services Saturday at Clairette for Erath County Pioneer
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3:00 at the Clairette Methodist Church for Matthew Merriam Stone, who passed from this life on the morning of September 3, 1943 at 6:00 o'clock at the home of his daughter Mrs. Cornelia Scott. Services were conducted by Rev. Floyd W Thrash assisted by Rev. W.H. Hogg. Burial was in the Clairette Cemetery with Barrows of Hico in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Stone was born in Talladega County, Alabama on February 18, 1855. He was married to Nancy Larimore in 1873 to this union were born 13 children, 9 of whom survive him. His wife passed away 9 years ago and since that time he has made his home with his children.
He united with the Methodist Church in young manhood having been a member over 60 years. He lived in Texas about 60 years and in Erath County 50.
Nine Children survive his as follows; Mrs. Sarah Moore of Stephenville, Mrs. Kate Bailey of Salem, Mrs. Cornelia Scott of Duffau, Edgar H Stone of Duffau, John T Stone of Hawkins, D.A.Stone of Fairfield, Illinois, Mrs. Lucille Edwards of Hobbs, New Mexico, Howard Stone of Houston and Ola Edwards of Hamilton.
There were 61 grandchildren and a large number of great grandchildren and other relatives and friends who mourned the departure of Mr. Stone. Three grandsons are in the Army. Mrs. Violet Stone has seen foreign service as a nurse in the present war. She has been wounded and will return.
