Son of James Edwards and Elizabeth (Huntington) Edwards.
Married 24 December 1824, Delhi, Delaware, New York to Maria Bill.
Joseph Edwards has his household in Diana, New York in 1830. He was in Captain Seth Dunham's Company Separate Battalion in 3rd Brigade of the Michigan Militia from 21 May to 3 June 1832 in the Black Hawk War. His service brought him to the Wisconsin prairie and he, like many others, carried stories back east of the fertile land. His household is near the rest of the Edwards family in the 1835 census. Joseph's family came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin Territory in May 1837. The Landt, Tiffany and Ward families also came to Aztalan, as they had moved with the Edwards family from Delhi, New York. Joseph Edwards is credited as the first white man buying land in what is now Waterloo Township. He took up land in Section 12 in 1838. He came with his father to Aztalan in June 1838 settling on the west side of the Crawfish River just south of present day Hubbleton, now in Milford Township. Joseph settled on a riverside plot, but because of flooding caused by a dam built to serve a mill owned by Olney, much of Joseph's land was flooded. The family moved to higher land in Section 12 of Waterloo Township. In June 1843 he settled on 160 acres in Columbus, Portage (now Columbia) County. He is considered an early settler of Columbia County. By then it was clear, after James Edwards' death, that the eldest son, Olney, was to inherit the farm along the Crawfish River and Joseph had to find better land than his flooded farm.
Joseph and Maria's daughter, Eliza, lived on the homestead after her parents' death and then sold it out of the family. The frame home on his Columbia County farm was still standing in 1981.

"Joseph Edwards - farmer, Section 9; P.O. Columbus; was born in Delaware Co., New York, in 1804, and made that his home till 17 years old [1821], then, with his parents, he removed to Lewis Co., New York; where he followed farming until 1837; emigrating then to Wisconsin, he located at Milford [then Aztalan], Jefferson Co., on a farm; six years later (June, 1843), he entered a farm of 160 acres in Secs. 4, 9 and 17, in the town of Columbus, Columbia Co., he being the second man to make a land entry in this part of the town; he moved his family up from Milford Jan. 18, 1844, and has since made it his home; he now has a farm of 280 acres. Mr. Edwards distinctly remembers of being summoned as a juror, at Portage, in an early day, when, upon the calling of the court, the docket showed not a single case for trial; his house was used for the church and schoolhouse for more than a year after his settlement there; the first minister to hold service there was the Rev. M. Jones, of the M[ethodist] E[piscopal] Church. Mr. Edwards was married in 1824 to Miss Maria Bill, of Delhi, Delaware Co., N.Y.; their children are Mariette, now the wife of S.S. Loveless, and lives in Clark Co., Wis.; Olney, now in the city of Oconto, Wis.; James J., Norfolk, Monroe Co., Wis.; Eliza, at home; Lorilla, now Mrs. Bennett, of Luddington, Mich.; Antha, now Mrs. C.S. McKinzie, of Oconto, Wis.; Maria, now Mrs. George Butterfield, lives in Oconto, Wis.; Joseph, Jr., now living at Waupun; Theron, at home on the farm. Mr. and Mrs. Edwards are members of the M.E. Church."

"Death of Joseph Edwards, Sr."

Mr. Joseph Edwards, Sr., of the town of Columbus, died on Saturday morning last. He was born in Delaware county, N.Y., in 1804, and was married to Miss Maria Bill, in 1824. Himself and family located at Milford, Jefferson county. In 1843 he came to Columbus, and entered the second piece of land in this vicinity, where he had ever since resided. His house was in those early days used for a church and schoolhouse for several years. Thus passes away another of the first settlers of our beautiful Wisconsin. He leaves a large family of grown up children, all of whom have found homes elsewhere excepting a daughter, Eliza, who remains on the old homestead, and Theron, a son, who with his own family, have a farm in the immediate vicinity. The funeral was on Tuesday, from the house, Rev. J.V. Trenery, of Fall River officiating."
