Lesley Angold Harrison was born on 24 December 1937, in the Islington District of England. At the time of her birth, her father, George James Harrison, was 44 years old, and her mother, Daisy Angold (Young) Harrison, was 39. She was the fourth child born to the union, joining two older brothers and one older sister. Her birth is listed in England and Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1916-2007. Later, another child would be added to the family, making a total of five children.
We only know small snippets of her young life. According to a 1998 interview, George revealed that his mother was sent to a convent school which put her “straight off religion.” He would also say that she was very English and describe how conservative or “afraid” of money she was, which influenced his own behavior towards money. In a 1988 interview with Life Magazine George mentions that his mother “loves music and used to be a singer when she was a girl.” It’s also known that she was a dancer and actually met her husband at a dance.
She married Kyriacos Panayiotou in 1958 in Pancras, Middlesex, at the age of 20. It is believed, but not confirmed, that the exact date was May 3. A record of their marriage can be found in the England and Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1916-2005, Marriages Registered in April, May and June 1958, Vol.: 5 d Page: 739. They welcomed their first daughter, Yioda, later that year.
The beginning of 1960 proved to be a difficult time for her when she found her father’s lifeless body on 4 January 1960. She was just 22 years old at the time. Happier times were ahead when in October she gave birth to her second daughter, Melanie.
When Lesley was 25 years old she and her husband welcomed a son. Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou was born on 25 June 1963. He would later become known to the world as George Michael.
On 5 January 1964, she would once again have the horrific opportunity of finding another loved one dead. This time it was her brother, Colin John Harrison. On his 2004 Patience album, George Michael included the song, “My Mother Had a Brother” which he wrote about his Uncle Colin and how times had changed for homosexual men. She would also suffer the loss of her mother, Daisy, in 1972.
Lesley was diagnosed with Melanoma 1996. She would succumb to the disease. Her family never left her side. She passed away on 26 February 1997, in England. She is buried at Highgate Cemetery West, in London, England.
