Capt. Allen Hayes was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Benedict) Hayes and grandson of James and Mary (Allen) Hayes, all of Norwalk, Connecticut. He arrived in Windsor in 1796 and became a successful merchant. He built a house on Main Street which was later occupied by Harriet Lane and demolished. (It was situated next to and south of Stoughton House.) He married Sophia West in 1796.
