son of Martin (1718-1783) and Maria Margareth Zimmer Ostertag (ca1734-1790), both born in Bischwiller, Alsace, France; who immigrated to America in 1765 at age 4 with his parents and older sister, Maria Elisabeth, who married Peter Eberhardt. Martin spent his early childhood in Frederick County, MD, where he married Barbara Bauer and where all of his children were born except Eve. They migrated first to Fayette County, Pennsylvania where Eve was born and then settled in Jefferson County, Ohio in April, 1800. They were a founding family of the Bowling Green Lutheran Church (Osage).
