SOUTH BEND - Sarah "Evelyn" Cates, 89, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2013, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. Evelyn was born on February 8, 1924 in Obion, TN, to the late William and Joy (McTurnan) Jordan.
Evelyn married Theron Cates in 1942, and is survived by her children, Carolyn Smith, of Mishawaka, IN, Kenneth (Karen) Cates, of Bend, OR, and Robert (Marilyn) Cates, of Mishawaka, IN; daughter in law, Monica Cates, of Kalamazoo, MI, 7 grandchildren, Michael Flory, Angel Flory, Adam (Sarah) Cates, Christy Holman, Jason (Amanda) Cates, Erin (Greg) Bowers and Sarah (Roy) Stricker; 6 great grandchildren, Lexi, Gabriele, Cameron, Nadia, Aniyha and Addison; and a sister, Mary Louise Payton, of Obion, TN.
Evelyn was preceded in death by 1 son, Dewayne "Pete" Cates; and 2 brothers, Henry and William Jordan.
Evelyn was a member of the Church of Christ and also the Red Hat Society. Visitation for Evelyn will be held from 4-8pm Sunday, October 6, 2013, at the Bubb Funeral Chapel 3910 N. Main St. The funeral service will be held at 10:00am Monday, October 7, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial is to follow the service at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, IN.
