Bonnie Allen was first married to Randolph Lockwood, whom she met while serving with the Red Cross in Hawaii during World War II. They had one son, who survived her. After the war she returned home to the farm, eventually earning an M.S. Ed degree from Southern Illinois University in 1947, followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. She taught in the Business Education department at SIU for many years. In 1964 she married a fellow professor, Leo Favrot.
