Anchorage resident Stanley Eugene Nelson, 78, died Jan. 28, 2005, at Jerry Pettis Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Loma Linda, Calif., after a long struggle to recover from cancer surgery.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 25 at Fort Richardson Military Chapel, followed by military honors at the gravesite. Afterward, the family will receive friends at the Anchorage Masonic Temple, 15th Avenue and Eagle Street.

He was born Feb. 6, 1926, in Crookston, Minn., to Peter and Grace (Michael) Nelson. He was the youngest of 10 children.

Mr. Nelson joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving aboard the USS Thatcher DD-514 and earning a Purple Heart. After the war, Mr. Nelson completed high school at Bremerton, Wash.

After six years in the Navy, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was assigned to Elmendorf Air Force Base in 1953 as a civil engineer. He retired from the Air Force in 1968.

Mr. Nelson married Darlene Curry in 1948. Except for two brief military assignments Outside, he lived in Alaska for the last 52 years.

Mr. Nelson enjoyed the Alaska outdoors. During his younger years, he hunted, fished and camped in his free time. In retirement he enjoyed fishing and boating in Resurrection Bay. He smoked fish in fall and winter, delighting in giving it to friends. He was also an accomplished woodworker, creating many lovely pieces, his family said.

Recently, Mr. Nelson served as president of the USS Thatcher Reunion Association for six years. He was a member of Anchorage Masonic Lodge 17, charter member of Al Aska Shrine Temple, and member of the Elks Lodge and American Legion Post 5, both in Seward.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law, Dale and John Cope of Chugiak; daughter, Sue Suit of Baltimore; grandchildren, Ryan Cope of Bethel, Rachelle Howard of Auburn, Wash., and Jennifer Morgan and Scott Suit, both of Baltimore; and sisters, Donna Reynolds and Wilma Turner, both of St. Paul, Minn.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
