Death Claims Mrs. Cavanagh
Mrs. James Cavanagh
Widow of Atty. James Cavanagh Dies.
Mrs. Nellie Parkinson Cavangh, 75, widow of late Attorney James Cavanagh and long a leader in the civic, social and literary life of Kenosha, died Wednesday evening at 6:15 at her home, 920 Sixtieth street, following a long illness from heart trouble. She had been critically ill for several weeks; on Wednesday she suffered a severe heart attack from which, due to her weakened condition, she could not rally.
News of her death came as a personal sorrow to the legion of friends she had made in more than a half century of residence in Kenosha.
Mrs. Cavanagh was born at Oshkosh, February the 8th, 1856, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Parkinson, pioneer residents of that community. She lived her early life in that city, receiving her education in the schools there.
Came Here In 1877
On April 25, 1877 she was united in marriage at Oshkosh to Attorney James Cavanagh; shortly thereafter they came to Kenosha, where her home has since been. Her husband was a leader in the legal profession in Kenosha for many years.
Mrs. Cavanagh had taken an active part in the religious, social and literary life of Kenosha for a half century. She was a member of the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and had been a leader in the women's organizations of that parish. For many years she was a member of the choir of that church and served also as an officer of women's work in the church.
Leader of Red Cross
In war days Mrs. Cavanagh was chairman of the women's work department of the American Red Cross movement in Kenosha, giving unstintingly of her time and talents to this work. She had a large part in gaining for the Kenosha Red Cross Organization the record of more than meeting all requirements made of it during the war.
She was one of the charter members of the Women's Club of Kenosha and was a past president of that group. She was also a past regent of the Kenosha Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was the first secretary of the Kenosha Hospital Association, serving in that office for several years.
She was a member of the Dickens Club, one of the early literary societies of Kenosha.
Mrs. Cavanagh is survived by one son, Attorney Richard P. Cavanagh, Kenosha, by one sister, Mrs. Clara P. Barnes, Kenosha, and by a granddaughter, Mary Ellen Cavanagh of Larchmont, N.Y. Her husband Attorney James Cavanagh preceded her in death February 18, 1920; tow sons also preceded her in death, Walter James Cavanagh, who died March 4, 1917, and James Cavanagh, Jr., who died in infancy in 1885.
The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church with the Reverend Kenneth D. Martin, pastor of the church officiating; Interment will follow in the family plot in the Green Ridge Cemetery.
