"We are pained to have to announce the death of Major John S. Braxton, formerly of this county, but at the time of his death a resident of Norfolk and Collector of that Port.
His death was quite sudden and unexpected, and a severe blow to his wife and family. He had just returned to Norfolk from a short visit to his old home, where he had left his family with a married daughter, Mrs. O.M. Lemoine, and his friends, who saw him then, say they had never seen him looking better.
He died about 5 o'clock on Saturday evening last and the sad intelligence was conveyed to his family by a Revenue Cutter, which was immediately dispatched for them.
Major Braxton was descended from one of the oldest families in the State, and having been long in public life was well known in Eastern Virginia, and, in his native county, had a host of friends who will mourn his loss.
Truly can we say, we have never known a public man who had more friends and fewer enemies.
His family have our sympathies in this, their great bereavement." Northern Neck News - Aug. 15, 1879.
