Thomas had two siblings, a younger brother, Mark Neary Donohue and a sister, Elizabeth Gabriel Donohue. Thomas grew up living at 1307 Clayton Street in Wilmington, Delaware. His father died from TB when he was just four years old. Thomas moved to 1305 Clayton Street, just next door from his old house when his mother married, James Gibney. When his mother married, he gained one stepsister, Elizabeth G. and two stepbrothers, Frederick James and Louise Garland. After his mother married Jack Gibney, the two of them had two more children, Robert B., and John Neary Gibney who they called Jack, giving him two more brothers. Thomas ended up being one of eight children.
