The son of Daniel & Elizabeth Nagle, in 1850 he was living with his parents on the family farm in Liverpool, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had blue eyes and is absent from the 1860 census.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg, Franklin County, September 14, 1861, mustered into federal service at Camp Nevin, Louisville, Kentucky, October 16 as a private with Co. C, 77th Pennsylvania Infantry. On November 1, he transferred to the regimental band only to be discharged with the entire band January 31, 1862, and die shortly after returning home.
