JAMES RICHARD "ZIP" DAVIS
James Richard "Zip" Davis, age 85, who was a life long resident of Elwood, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2013 at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital.
Zip was born on September 15, 1928, in Elwood to the late Thomas and Silvia (Balser) Davis.
Zip graduated from Elwood High School in 1947. On July 12, 1948, he married the love of his life Jane (Ring) Davis, they have been married for 65 years.
Zip began his barber's career in 1948, after hitchhiking to barber's school. Anyone who wanted to catch up on the latest sporting events could come into Zip's Barber Shop on Saturday mornings to discuss the games. Zip was very instrumental in starting the Little League Baseball program in Elwood, where he served as treasurer for many years. Zip and Jane could always be found in the Elwood stands supporting the Panther teams.
Zip is survived by his loving family, wife: Jane (Ring) Davis of Elwood, 2 Sons - Joe & wife Beth Davis of Manhattan Beach, CA, and Andy Davis of Elwood; Grandchildren: Miles Davis, Mitch Davis, Brett & (Maria) Davis, Chadd & (Regan) Davis, and Bristyn Davis Great Grandchildren: Grant Davis, West Davis, Ava Davis, and Ezra Davis
Zip was preceded in death by his Parents, Son Ted Davis, 2 Brothers, and 2 Sisters
A Celebration of Life service will be at 5:00 pm Saturday, November 2, 2013, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, Elwood, with Rich Leavell officiating. Cremation will follow. Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1113 S. Anderson Street, Elwood, Indiana 46036. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Alzheimer's Association.
