KERRVILLE — Our loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, Mack Gum, 84 of Kerrville, passed from this life on July 13, 2012.

Mack was born on Feb. 7, 1928 in Lott to Guy and Allie Gum. He spent his childhood in Lott with his parents, brothers and sister working on the farm and attending school where he was named the class clown in 1944. He graduated from Lott High School in 1946 and joined the Navy and served 2 years. After returning home, he met Betty Rainey at a Fort Worth drug store. They married on Feb. 19, 1949 and moved to Beeville in 1949 where they lived for 35 years and raised their children.

Mack worked for Amoco Oil Company for 39 years, having spent the last three years of his employment in Port Gentil, Africa. He spent summers camping with family on the Brazos River, did a little fishing, picked up a guitar now and then, bowled with the local bowling leagues and made a couple trips every year to visit the lights of Vegas. Laughter was a part of all their adventures, mostly laughing at each other. Mack and Betty toured Africa by safari along with several other stops in many exotic countries. They retired to the Hill Country in 1986. They joined a motor club and continued to travel the country via motor home until 1996.

Mack spent many hours in his workshop, building treasures out of the oddest things. A model of the home he grew up in made out of toothpicks, windmills out of square nails, acoustic guitars, bird houses and any other wood projects he (or someone else) could think up for him. His yard was always trimmed and the garden always abundant. They were members of First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Monroe and Milton, sister, Mamie Sue Gum Hadley and brother in law, Homer.

Mr. Gum is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty Jane Gum; son, Jerry Gum and wife, Dana of Socorro, NM; daughter, Beverly Doubrava and husband, Doug of Kerrville; grandkids, Carrie Stephens, Amy Doubrava, Keith Gum and wife, Priscilla, Dea Ann Henson and husband, Bryan and Melissa Gum; great grandchildren, Lauryn, Meagan, Carlie, Chase, Makayla, Jenna, Marcos, Braxtyn, Noah and D.J.; sister in law, Betty Gum; brother in law, James Rainey & wife, Joy and many nieces and nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews and cousins. We will miss him dearly.

Funeral services for Mr. Gum will be held on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels with Rev. James Ennis officiating. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.
