Bernard's name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument on Omaha Beach, France.
Sergeant Bernard B. Baker was 18 yrs. old when he enlisted into the U.S. Army. He was 23 yrs. old at the time of his death. His unit, 1st Infantry Division- 26th Infantry Regiment, was one of the first to arrive at the invasion of Normandy, France on June 6, 1944 (D-Day) during WWII. They landed at the section known as "Omaha Beach".
Sgt Baker was awarded the Silver Star for valor in combat/ gallantry in action twice. Once for his actions on Dec. 28, 1942 and once for his actions on June 9, 1944- the date of his death. He was KIA ( killed in action).
Note- If a soldier is awarded more than one Silver Star- a Oak Leaf Cluster is awarded and attached to the ribbon area of the Silver Star. For each additional Silver Star awarded, another Oak Leaf Cluster is added.
