James Johnson (Jimmy) was born in Moe Township, Douglas County on July 23, 1904, the son of Sigvart and Andria Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed in the West Moe Lutheran Church. For many years he had an orchestra that played through out Minnesota and the Dakota's. On December 17, 1931 he was united in marriage to Leota Chandler at East Grand Forks, Minnesota. They moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, which has been their home for the past thirty two years. He taught private music lessons in St. Paul and Minneapolis and he also played in several orchestra's in the Minneapolis area. He had a Gold Membership with the St. Paul's Musician Union.

James passed away Saturday, February 15, 1975 at the Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis at the age of 70 years. Surviving are his wife; Leota; one sister (Gladys) Mrs. George Shervey of Elbow Lake, Minnesota and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, twin brother, Joseph, Roy, Harry and Sidney and one sister, Merriam.

Funeral services were Wednesday, February 19, 1975, 1:00 p.m. from the Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria, Minnesota, Rev. Dale Friddle of Minneapolis officiating. Interment at West Moe Cemetery, Moe Township. Pallbearers were Edmond Hawkinson, Edward Chandler, Kenneth Johnson, Raymond Johnson, Mark Hanna and Everett Working.
