Leota (Chandler) Johnson was born June 9, 1911 in Polk County, Minnesota to Clark and Hattie (McMahon) Chandler. She attended school in rural Polk County and the Crookston Ag School and worked as a waitress. Leota married James Johnson on December 17, 1931 in East Grand Forks. The couple made their home in St. Cloud for a short time and then moved to Minneapolis for 56 years. Leota worked as an office manager at the Holland Furnace Company for many years, first in St. Cloud and then Minneapolis. She also traveled with her husband, who was a musician and had his own band throughout Minnesota and the Dakotas. Leota was a skilled bowler and enjoyed cooking and was well known as "Mrs. Hospitality".

Leota died on October 15, 1999 in Minneapolis at the age of 88 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James in 1975 and five brothers. Leota is survived by three sisters: Dorothy Mansfield of Longview, WA; Mary Jo (Norman) Hovet of Portland, OR; Alice (Al) Schireman of Mesa,AZ; brother: Ed (Arleigh) Chandler of Bemidji; sister-in-law Gladys Shervey of Minneapolis.

Funeral services were on October 19, 1999 at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Interment was at the West Moe Cemetery in rural Garfield with Ray Johnson, Kenneth Johnson, Marvin Chandler, Michael Rosenstiel, Loren Backlund, Ed Hawkinson, Randy Boe and Keith Olsen serving as pallbearers. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home.
