Johneene Koch Newton was born in Bakersfield, Ca. on May 20, 1934. On the morning of Monday, November 4, 2013, Johneene passed away at her home in Prather, Ca. at the age of 79. Johneene grew up in Bakersfield, attended Bakersfield High School, Bakersfield College, University of California, Berkley and California State University, Fresno. Johneene began her career in 1957, teaching kindergarten at Kerman-Floyd Elementary School. She then took time away from teaching to raise her family, and later returned to education in the Clovis Unified School District. For the last twenty years of her career, Johneene taught kindergarten at Madison Elementary School in Sanger, Ca. She retired from teaching in 1993. Johneene met Bob Newton during her senior year in high school. They began dating, and married on February 20, 1955, when Bob returned from Korea. Early in their marriage, Johneene and Bob lived in Terre Haute Indiana, Jamestown, New York, and then settled in Clovis in 1956. Johneene loved to travel during the summers with Bob and her two children. The family camping experiences began with a station wagon and tent, progressed to a tent trailer and finally a fifth wheel. Johneene and Bob traveled the United States pulling their fifth wheel visiting 47 of the 50 states. Johneene thoroughly loved her family and her home. She loved to garden and had a passion for the "Old English" garden. She enjoyed decorating for the seasons and holidays. Family gatherings always included meals at the dining room table decorated with seasonal centerpieces and dinnerware. Christmas was always a special time when the whole family gathered at Bob and Johneene's house to celebrate with great food and fellowship. Johneene looked for the good in people and decided each day to enjoy life, to love God and love others. Johneene is survived by Bob, her husband of 59 years; her son, Michael Newton and his wife Kim; her daughter, Lissa Vasquez and her husband Gilbert; her four grandchildren, Christopher Vasquez, Casey Vasquez, Davis Newton, Austin Newton and great-granddaughter, Ava Vasquez. A Graveside Service and Celebration of Johneene's Life will be held at the Red Bank Cemetery.
