He was born July 9, 1924 in Johnston City, the son of James R. and Emma "Goldie" Roach Hurd Sr. He first married Betty I. True on July 6, 1947 in Henry. She died Dec. 17, 1977. He then married Theresa M. Foster on Aug. 17, 1979 in Toluca. She died Sept. 12, 2010. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Wanita and Wanda; one grandson, James Christopher and one granddaughter, Tonya.
Surviving are three children, James (Sharon) Hurd, George Hurd and Sharon (Al) Kuhlman; two stepchildren, Janet (Kenneth) Fleeman and Joseph (Cathy) Althaus; one brother, Robert (Kathryn) Hurd; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Marines. He worked in maintenance at B.F. Goodrich in Henry for 27 years.
