In Edinburgh in 1816 David was apparently a medical student when Margaret Kininmond gave birth to a son she named John Kininmond Fairbairn; there was a scandal and David left for North America abandoning the girl and child.
Five years later in 1821 David shows up in Whitehall, N.Y. where he married Lucinda Simpson, family correspondence indicates the wedding was attended his brother Robert.
By 1822, David and Lucinda can be found in Brockville where the first of 8 children were born. Lucinda died in 1842 and in short order David married Catherine Fulford. Beginning in 1844, 11 children were born to Catherine and David bring David's total to 20 children.
Concurrently, in 1822 in Cobourg, Ontario, David's brother Robert was married and soon settled in Bowmanville where 13 children followed.
Circa 1845, David's son abandoned in Edinburgh in 1816, John Kininmond Fairbairn with wife Grace and 2 sons emigrated from Scotland to Perth, Ontario.
Also circa 1845, David's brother Henry emigrated to Ontario with his wife Mary Kininmond with sons #7, 8 and 9 settling in Perth also; it is assumed Mary Kininmond and David Fairbairn's Edinburgh paramour Margaret Kininmond were sisters (small world, daa.)
Finally, again mid 1840s, to round out the picture, Margaret Erskine (nee Kininmond) with husband Francis Erskine, son James and daughter Jane too emigrated and settle in Perth.
David's obituary indicates he was actually born at Channabank (Shanly Bank) while his baptism was Abbey St. Bathans, Berwickshire.
Missing from the listed children are Catherine Fairbairn's 2 sons, her 3rd and 4th children that died young, Edward, b. Feb 1, 1848, died before 1852 and Robbie, b. Feb 3, 1850, died before 1861.
