89, departed this life on Veterans Day after a brief illness. She was born August 9, 1924 in Birmingham and attended Ensley High School, where she met her future husband, Robert D. Norman. She later graduated from Birmingham Southern College. After Joan's marriage to Mr. Norman in 1949 she, while in her 20's, became employed as a math professor at the University of Alabama. She continued to support the family while he attended the University of Alabama Law School. After his graduation the couple moved from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham where she spent the balance of her life. Joan enjoyed extensive travel, snow skiing, her family, her friends, and her Ft. Walton Beach, Florida family residence. She was a lifelong member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in both Birmingham and Ft. Walton Beach. Joan was ever cheerful, engaging, and a conversationalist second to none. She is survived by her son, Robert D. Norman, Jr., (Susan) daughter, Carol Norman McWhorter, (Craig) and grandchildren, Lindsay Anne Norman, Andrew Alan McWhorter, and Robert D.(Bo) Norman III. A graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery on Thursday, November 14 at 1:00 P.M.
