The 1880 Federal Census for Gilead, Nebraska (Thayer County) shows Ivy Morse, age 6, born in Iowa; living with her father, Silas Morse, a farmer, age 35, born in Iowa; and her mother, Mary, age 30, born in Iowa. Also living in the household were Ivy's siblings: Jennie Morse, age 9; and Ora Morse, age 3; both born in Iowa.

Iva married John about 1897. They had at least four children: Walter, Charles, Ruth and an infant boy. In 1917 John obtained 160 acres of farmland in San Bernardino County, under the terms of the Homestead Act of 1862. His son (Iva's stepson) Harry, and their friend Walter Knott, obtained adjoining parcels. Walter and his wife Cordelia went on to fame as the founders of Knott's Berry Farm in Orange County, California.
