In 1917 John obtained 160 acres of farmland in San Bernardino County, under the terms of the Homestead Act of 1862. His son (Iva's stepson) Harry, and their friend Walter Knott, obtained adjoining parcels. Walter and his wife Cordelia went on to fame as the founders of Knott's Berry Farm in Orange County, California.
