Second Lieutenant Arthur D. Baker, who left Blairsville as a private with Company L, when the National Guard was sworn into the Federal Service has been reported killed in action in Italy, according to word received y his wife, Mrs. Ruby (Faith) Baker of 51 South Walnut Street, Blairsville. He previously had been reported as missing in action as of December 1, 1943.
Following the arrival of his National Guard unit in the South Early in 1941, Private Baker was assigned to the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga., where he was subsubquently graduated as a Second Lieutenant in the all of 1942. He was sent overseas in February 1943 and participated in the North Africian and Italian campaigns. He spent the Christmas season of 1942 with his wife and son in Blairsville.
Surviving are his widow and the son, James A., who will be six years old next Monday, are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Baker of Mansfield, Ohio; five brothers: Frank, Harold and William, all of Mansfield, Ohio; Harry with the Navy in the Southwest Pacific and John with the Army in Italy, and three sisters; Mrs. Warren Algor, Mrs. Marian Nixon and Miss Jean Baker, all of Mansfield. The Baker family left Blairsville seven years. Mrs. Arthur Baker is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Faith of 429 North Walnut Street, Blairsville.
