Thomas headed west after the CW from Grayson Cty, Va, to follow two brothers. He started for Nebraska where he joined them. Shortly after arriving he left for Calif and then to Oregon to see a sister.He worked in the territory until 1877 as a sheepman and cowpuncher.
In the fall of 1877 he received a letter from his brother Jack in SD. Thomas then left for the mid-west. He and his brother arranged a wagon train of 78 yoke of teams of oxen, 446 hogs, 84 cows, 18 horses and 16 men to go mid west with him. It arrived at Deadwood SD in late 1878 with big profits for the Hale brothers. Then Jack and Thomas relocated Sioux Chief Spotted Tail by Jan 1, 1879 as per Federal Govt. request.
Thomas still had waiting back at home in Va.: Mary Virginia Fulton.
He planned one last trip west to Oregon with horses, many of them thoroughbreds whose progeny later gained fame. He had a brush with death in the Yellowstone River.
He then went to Va. to marry on Christmas Eve 1883. After a 3 mth honeymoon they headed for SD. He purchased a ranch in the Black Hills.
Children born in SD: Cabell b 1884, Mary, Reeves.
In 1919 he moved to San Diego, Cal where Mrs Hale died 1935 and Thomas 1942.
