I adopted Duke from English Springer Spaniel Rescue Association in December 2010. He had been rescued from a high kill shelter in Idaho, and was in foster care in Spokane. His name was Doug, and he became Duke on the way back to Montana. He was such a fun, fun-loving dog. He was vocal and growled, but never because he was upset, annoyed or mad. I found it disconcerting until I realized that it was just a noise he liked to make. I have spent my life around dogs, and Duke was the only dog who growled with pleasure. Duke loved to swim, liked toys, but he didn't mess with Sugar's frisbees or tennis balls. He liked people, especially children, cats and other dogs, but sometimes had to act tough, probably because Sugar was the boss. Duke was already a pretty old guy when he joined our pack. We have no idea of what his life was like before he picked us. We were so happy to be able to share our lives in the short time that we had together. We miss you, big guy!
