Vevie was fourth of seven children born to Franklin Layefette and Sylvina (York) Williams. She married Loammie A. Edwards in 1981 and they were the parents of two daughters: Evelyn Jane and Dorothy Mae.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and a native of Randolph County.
Surviving are husband, L. Edwards; daughters, Mrs. Frank Kemper and Mrs. Horace Whitfield of Greensboro; sisters, Mrs. Cosie Holmes of Lumberton, Mrs. Nina Scott of Liberty; two grandchildren.
