Dear Mrs. Hammond
I take the liberty of writing to you at this trying moment to offer our sympathy of the loss of our dear friend, your husband, who died a noble death for his King and Empire on June 2nd last.
I was with your husband up to and at the time of his death, which occurred as we were repulsing an attack of the enemy. George showed great courage and he was a great help to the boys as he encouraged them by his own bravery.
We were in the trench together as they were shelling us to keep us back when several shells hit near us, one of which killed George instantly and wounded several others.
It has been a sad blow to all of his friends who esteemed and loved him very much for his honourable ways; but memory of him will ever linger in his friends' minds.
Dear Mrs. Hammond, please again accept our sincerest sympathy. We all wish to be remembered to you as friends of George.
