Son of George William (d.1919) and Catherine Hollingworth (d.1914), Brother of William, Ada and Harold.

Enlisted at Rochdale. Previously served at least 6 years in India and latterly in Ireland, prior to going to Belgium.

Previously employed as a gardener, prior to enlistment.
