Considered one of the great race horses of the 20th century. Nicknamed the "Iron Horse" for his ability to carry high weights, he was the first horse to be voted U.S. Champion Handicap horse. In 1935 he was selected as the American Horse of the Year. As a stud, Discovery was a top broodmare sire with his daughters producing some of the great race horses and sires of their day including Native Dancer, Bold Ruler, Ruffian, Bed o'Roses, and Hasty Road. Over 80 percent of today's champion race horse carry Discovery's blood including the last three triple crown winners Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed.
