The Oppermann family lived in Netzbach until 1860 when they emigrated to the United States. They first settled at Hunt's Corners, Huron Co., Ohio, and then moved to a farm in Lyme Twp. of the same county.
On February 10, 1861, Sophia married Johann Heymann. They lived on his farm west of Hunt's Corners and had five children:
John Jr. (b. 1862)
Elizabeth (b. 1864)
Charles William (b. 1866)
Mary (b. 1867)
William (b. 1872)
In 1873 she was left a widow with a young family. She rented out the farm until her two eldest sons, at ages 19 and 15, were able to operate a part of the farm along with her.
