When Edward was born his family was living in Welton, Clinton County, Iowa. His parents had immigrated from Oldenburg, Holstein, in 1852 with his then 3-year old brother, Adolph (Otto).
After settling in Iowa his parents had a daughter, Bertha, followed two years later by Edward.
He lived in Sioux City for the last 48 years of his life, working as a Stationary Engineer for 35 of those years. Edward never married, but maintained close ties with his and his sister's family.
