Alexander Buchanan was born in County Donegal, Ireland in 1781 to James Buchanan and his wife, name unknown. He had two brothers, David and James, and a sister, name unknown. Alex was a farmer and was married in Ireland, probably in County Donegal, about 1810 to Mary Bovard and they had nine children, all born in Ireland. Alexander and Mary, along with eight of their children, Sarah, Charles, Mary, Robert, Washington, James, Susannah, and John, left Londonderry on the ship the Barque Regent and arrived in New York 25 Jul 1834 after a passage of thirteen weeks. They settled on a farm near Forestville, Butler County, PA living in a log house. Alexander died on 27 Dec 1858 in Butler County, Pennsylvania with 77 years of age and was buried in the Harrisville Cemetery.
