Faithful to His promise, on Oct. 30, 2013, God took Sophie Gruenenwald from Heritage Homes in Watertown, WI, to live eternally in Heaven with Him.

She was born on May 29, 1914, in Lorraine, WI, the daughter of the late George and Ida (Redlin) Adascheck. She was baptized on June 1, 1914 at Evangelical Lutheran in Cumberland, WI. Sophie was especially pleased to tell people that in 1893 her father and one other man were sent to Arizona to be missionaries to the Apache Indians. Not having attended high school, she was especially proud to pass the equivalency test that enabled her to attend a nursing program and become a home health nurse.

Sophie married Verne Gruenenwald of Madison on June 9, 1962, at St. James Lutheran in Wauwatosa. He died on Feb. 4, 1999. She had been a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, its Mission Society, and a life member of the Mid-Continent Railway Historical Society, Inc. in North Freedom, WI. Every Thursday after she was married, Verne took her to the Red Cross where she helped with the blood drive.

Survivors include her niece, Kathryn (Bill) Banbury of Lake Mills, who helped her for the last 20 years; her godson and nephew, Fred (Karen) Kreutz of Mukwonago; the great-nephew of her husband, and grandson of her heart, Jay (Karen) Fleury of Cottage Grove; brother-in-law, Gerald Gruenenwald of Fonora; sister-in-law, Juanita Olson of Eau Claire; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and 13 siblings.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, 2013, at the Claussen Funeral Home in Lake Mills, with the Rev. James E. Rath officiating. Visitation will be after 9:30 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home until the time of services. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens in the Town of Cottage Grove. Memorials may be made to WELS Missions, Heritage Homes, or Rainbow Hospice Care, Inc. Thanks to the caregivers at Heritage Homes and to the Rainbow Hospice workers who have given Sophie such faithful, loving care, especially these past weeks.
