Johannes Olsen, was born November 17, 1874 in Brandval, Hedmark, Norway. He was married on June 7, 1902 to Karen (Carrie) Andreasdt. Carrie was born October 8, 1875 on the Gjermshusberget farm in Vinger, Hedmark, Norway. They were descendants of the "Forest Finns" highly skilled farmers shroud in "magic and mystery" and renown for their "slash and burn" method of clearing forests for farming.

Johannes and Carrie moved to Eidskog, Hedmark, Norway and lived on Duelien farm. They had three children while living there (Anette, Christian and Iver).

Johannes emigrated on June 8, 1907. He took the SS Oslo from Oslo, Norway to Hull, England. Then he took the SS Celtic (part of the White Star Line) from Liverpool, England to New York City.
