William was an orphan in England, and sent to live on the Burn's farm in Kilbride, Ontario. In April 1889 he travelled to Alberta to homestead, walking to Poplar Grove (now Innisfail) from Calgary with John Dodd and Arthur Bioletti. William also worked for the Alberta Central Railway, later for the municipality as a road foreman, councillor, school trustee and member of the Agricultural Society. He married Martha Bioletti Jan 19, 1898.
