He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 13 August 1915 and embarked from Melbourne for overseas on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT "Ulysses" (A38). He was wounded in action on 9 August 1916 and after recuperation he rejoined his battalion on 12 September 1916. He was taken prisoner of war on 11 April 1917 an interned at Limburg, Germany. After the Armistice he was sent to England on 15 December 1918 and repatriated to Australia on 5 May 1919. He died from influenza at the No. 11 Australian General Hospital, Caulfield, Victoria. He was aged 23 years.
