U.S. Senator. He attended Dickinson College, Delaware College, studied law, was admitted to the Bar and opened a law practice in Georgetown, Delaware. Entering politics, he served as Attorney General of Delaware, (1850 to 1855). In 1859, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1871. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was the Delaware State Chancellor from 1874, until his death. His brothers were Delaware Governor Gove Saulsbury, U.S. Senator Eli Saulsbury and father of U.S. Senator Willard Saulsbury Jr.
