Ted Cowan, 66, of Fitzgerald, Georgia died Thursday, October 31, 2013, at Phoebe Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald. Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Saturday, November 2, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Fitzgerald with the Rev. Blane Jacobs officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Friday evening at the funeral home.
Mr. Cowan was born January 6, 1947, in Ben Hill County, Georgia, to the late Garland & Ruth Pope Cowan. He was a 1965 graduate of Fitzgerald High School. He attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton. Mr. Cowan received his Masters degree in Forestry from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho. He was President of Colony Peanut & Storage and a long-time farmer. He was a former member of the Ben Hill-Irwin Tech Board of Directors and served on the FSA Committee for Ben Hill County. He was active in the Young Farmers and was currently vice-chairman of the Colony Bank of Fitzgerald Advisory Board. He was also active on the Ben Hill County Farm Bureau Board. Mr. Cowan received the Master Farmer Award in 2008 from the ABAC Alumni Association. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fitzgerald and the Sportsman’s Sunday school class.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years: Frankie Walker Cowan of Fitzgerald; a daughter: Leigh & Jeff Horn of Hiram; a son: Tad Cowan of Fitzgerald; and three grandchildren: Madison Horn, Tate Cowan, and Ty Cowan.
