United States Census, 1870
birth: from 1811 to 1812 Pennsylvania
residence: 1870 Kansas, United States
other: Wife: Matilda Trout, Wheeler TroutHusband of Margaret SMITH (1815-1850), Matilda unknown (1812-?), and Sarah Jane TILLEY (1924-1886)

Abraham TROUT was born 21 Aug 1812 near the headwaters of Fort Run, near Timberville, Rockingham, VA, the son of Casper TROUT (1762-1837) and Anna Maria AMENT (1767-1849).

As a young child, Abraham moved with his parents by 1820 to near Deavertown, York Twp, Morgan, OH. By 1855, Abraham had moved to Shelby County, IL. During the Civil War, Abraham enlisted at Shelbyville, IL on 18 Feb 1865 as a Private under Captain Martin in Company "K," 14th Illinois Infantry Regiment, mustering in on that same day at Camp Butler, IL. However, the Civil War was over two months later on 9 Apr 1865, and while the records are incomplete, it appears that Abraham deserted two months later on 26 Jun 1865 in St. Louis, MO. One can only speculate, but perhaps with the war being over for several months, Abraham saw no reason to continue to be away from his farm and family. Regardless, by 1870, Abraham had moved to Ottumwa, Coffey, KS, and remained in Coffey County for the rest of his life.

Abraham had married first to Margaret SMITH on 6 Dec 1832 in Morgan County, OH, where she later died 7 Nov 1850. Abraham then appears to have been married to a "Matilda" (no further information), and then remarried again on 18 Dec 1875 in Coffey County, KS to Sarah Jane STANFIELD (nee TILLEY) who was born in Tennessee about 1824. Sarah had been married 3 times before she married Abraham. Sarah died of Typhoid Fever 23 Aug 1886 in Ottumwa Twp, Coffee, KS.
