He has made his home with his daughter Mrs Hazel Barker of 75 Summer St Lewiston, ME for the past seven years.
As a young man he worked as a blacksmith, and later was employed as a car inspector for the Maine Central Railroad.
He moved from Bath, ME to Leeds, ME and then to Rockland, ME where he lived twenty years, and where Mrs Bates died nine years ago.
He is survived by his daughter Mrs Barker; two sons Harold M Bates of Rockland, ME: Arthur I Bates of Parkersburg, WV; one brother Cyrus S Bates of Hyde Park, MA; a sister Bessie B Fogg of Greene, ME; seven grandchildren.
