Al Towles, 86, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at his home in Garden City. He was born Oct. 24, 1927, in Garden City to Alfred and Ruth S. Scott Towles, Sr. Towles was a veteran of the United States Navy. He grew up in Holcomb, graduated from Garden City High School and attended Garden City Community College. He was a partner in Fankhauser, Inc., and a partner and manager for Cash and Carry Lumber Co. He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church of Garden City, the Knights of Columbus, the Hi-Plains Bassmasters, and the National Lumberman's Association. He served on the city Housing Board, and was a city commissioner and served twice as mayor. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing bridge, golfing, politics, yard work, gardening and watching football. He was an avid reader, especially American history and World War II history. He married Betty Long on Oct. 12, 1947, at Cottonwood Falls. She survives. Other survivors include five daughters, Sharyl and husband Larry Kells of Garden City, Carol and husband Richard Gruber of St. Peters, Mo., Cindy and husband David Waits of Stillwater, Okla., Karen Pontious of Arkansas City, and Jone and husband Mark Drazic of Elkhorn, Neb.; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack Towles. A Vigil service and Rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. today at the church. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Dominic School Endowment Fund or to St. Catherine Hospice, both in care of the funeral home.
