Thomas served as a private in Company G, 7th Regiment of Mississippi Infantry, CSA. Fought at the Battle of Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing) and then served in the Army of Tennessee under Confederate Generals Braxton Bragg and Leonidas Polk. Badly wounded, he died on Nov. 4, 1862, at the Courthouse Hospital at Knoxville during Confederate Occupation Eastern Tennessee.
