Born in Selb, Germany. Grethlein was a supervisor in the engineering firm that was in charge of the Nazi construction projects on the Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden, where Adolf Hitler had his Alpine home “Berghof.” Grethlein’s congenial personality made him very popular with his co-workers. After Allied troops occupied the area in May 1945, Grethlein attempted to maintain order among the plundering. On 5 May 1945 he and his driver, Josef Lohr, were shot to death by a drunken French occupation soldier. They were buried together in the same grave.
