Evelyn was the fourth of ten children of Norwegian immigrants Marius Magnuson and Nellie Krossen. She was especially loved by her youngest sister Lillian who remembered Evelyn loved music and dancing. For a time before her final illness she cared for her young cousin Sybil Ness in Oakland.
