Walter was educated in the city schools and engaged in farming as an occupation. In 1878, along with his brother, Christopher, he started a market in the city of Hornellsville. He later became interested in real estate. In 1891, he bought a part of the old VanScoter farm, which he laid out in lots, made many valuable improvements and erected nine of the most beautiful cottages in the city. Also on this tract was erected the South Side Methodist Episcopal Church at an expense of $10,000.
