Marie and Lawrence Beach left Checotah headed for California, they got married somewhere between Checotah and Groom, Texas. It had been snowing and at around 2:30 am while traveling West on Route 66 just 23 miles from Amarillo and about 1 mile West of Conway, Texas they were involved in a Head-on collision when a driver crossed the center line. The two vehicles swerved from side to side trying to avoid each other when they crashed.
The 1941 coach owned by J.M. Roark who was a passenger in the front seat, Mr. Beach was driving and Mrs. Beach was setting in the front seat (middle) she and J.M. died at the scene of the crash. There were 3 others in the Roark vehicle Dylon L. Dollens, 33 of Checotah, Nelson Holly 26 of Bakersfield, CA and his brother Richard I. Holly 38. The driver of the other car, a 1935 sedan was Howard Karr Lynch, 22 of Conway, Texas also seriously injured.
